WelcomeWe're finally getting around to the newsletter that Shawn's been mentioning at the meetings. We plan on sending it out monthly, via email, in between meetings. We'll include notices of upcoming FAVAN meetings and other meetings or seminars in the area. By the time this goes out, anyone should be able to sign up on line at the web site. You do not need to be a member to get the newsletter. For FAVAN members that don't have access to email, we'll send a copy in the mail. Just let us know if you need to get a copy this way. This issue will be a little short as we're still working through the logistics and technical issues of sending out the first edition. Upcoming MeetingsThe meeting on April 26 is a open discussion meeting for parents and family members. We will likely have another open discussion meeting in May. Please let us know if you have any ideas for speakers or topics for meetings. We'll start planning meetings for September through June 2006 shortly. NewsConnecticut Senator Christopher Dodd is co-sponsoring a bill called "Combating Autism Act of 2005". The bill would significantly increase research at the federal government level. It would also increase resources for screening and intervention. The bill calls for spending $860 million on these efforts over the next five years. Special EducationWe expect the new State guidelines for educating children with autism to be published in the next 2-3 months. We are planning to have someone for the State Department of Education as a speaker once the guidelines are published. We will definitely announce the publication in this newsletter and at the FAVAN meetings as soon as the document is published. |
