Upcoming Meetings

We are pleased to have a special presentation at our April Meeting.   

On April 28, Kristen Powers, OTR will present Incorporating a Sensory Diet in Everyday Life.  The presentation is for both parents and professionals and will provide information on how do address the sensory needs of a child on the spectrum.

Our May Meeting, on May 27 will be an open discussion meeting for parents.  

Announcements

We've recently added to the following books to the FAVAN library.  They are available for borrowing for any registered FAVAN members.  Registration forms are available at the meeting.

  • Rules by Cynthia Lord.  Rules is a novel exploring the impact of understanding social rules and an adolescent's view of feeling different and finding acceptance.  It is a Newberry Honor book and received the Schneider Family Book Award.
  • Born on a Blue Day, Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant by Daniel Tammet.  It is the author's narrative of what its like to have a mind that is both different from those around him yet capable to living an independent life.
  • School Success for Kids with Asperger's Syndrome by Sephan M Silverman Ph.D. and Rich Weinfeld.  The book covers topics including recognition and diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome, implementing successful practices int he classroom, working with the school system and providing interventions in the home.  The topics have been covered in other books, but every book seems to offer it's own insights and different books seem to resonate with different families.
  • Strange Son by Portia Iverson.  It is the story of two families who worked to redefine autism, how autistic people should be treated and even the nature of autism itself.

CT-ASRC is offering summer programs for students on the spectrum.
